LDS Philanthropies Misalignment

I worked for the Telefund at LDS Philanthropies for eight months. During my time there I made calls to BYU alumni to ask for donations. Our goal as callers is to generate the most donations by charging a credit card or sending out a pledge form that will be returned with a check or cash. In the telefund we are paid on an hourly basis. There is no monetary reason for callers to try harder to sell because they are not rewarded. This is a misalignment that leads to dissatisfaction when callers who are doing very well get paid the same as others who don't achieve the same result. The strategic objective is to get the greatest amount of donation from alumni, but the compensation within the organization doesn't align with that objective.

I will start working at Preneed Company of America (PRECOA) starting this winter. I want to analyze the situation using Collins Hedgehog concept.

I want with all my heart to see this company dominate the market. I love this business, I just hope I can find a spot on the bus where I can be best fitted.
Drive you economic engine- The company will be able to provide a salary that will meed my economic needs for my family. The company has great growth prospects which will lead to higher compensation.
Best in the world- I know the company can be the best in the world and I know that I can contribute to that dream. The company has a very specific culture that I can become the best in the world at managing that culture. Netflix Fluke

Netflix recently decided that it is going to re-brand the DVD shipping portion of the business by calling it Qwikster. This switch will allow Netflix users to only receive streaming content while Qwikster users will only receive the DVDs. The problem with this strategy is that they ruining part of their convenience factor. I only want to go to Netfilx for my streaming content AND getting DVDs in the mail. This transition could have been effective if it had a clear way to distinguish itself. Currently sites like, Hulu, Amazon, Google, and Apple are investing in streaming content which will take away market share.

Tablets on the Rise

When tablets originally came into the market I was taking a Information systems 201. In class we debated whether or not tablets were a disruptive technology or a sustaining technology. A disruptive technology being a new way of doing this that initially does not meet the needs of existing customers. The class was torn. Over the last few years applications have started to take a hold of the tablet concept. These apps started to preform activities that personal computers currently preform. Thus disrupting the current PC market. Consumers who use their personal computers for simplistic need have found the tablets are able to preform these same functions while being extremely portable and easy to use. Tablets are taking markets shares from the personal computers whose profit has been relatively low compared to the computer profit pool and turning a much higher profit through these devices.
